Finding the cheapest smartphone
Not everyone wants (or needs) the latest, highest specification phone, so we thought we'd take a look at the cheapest smartphones around.
For the last few months, the Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 3 (3.5 inch version) has topped our homepage table as the cheapest smartphone contract. At the moment, you can get the phone for free, 150 minutes, 5000 texts and 250MB data for £4.99 a month. However, the Pixi 3 isn't exactly a great phone. It's only got 512MB RAM, so it's going to be very very slow, and 4GB of internal storage isn't really enough in 2017.
For £6.99 a month it's possible to get a slightly more usable phone. The Motorola Moto C (2017 version) has got a 5 inch screen, 16GB storage and 1GB RAM. It won't be the fastest phone around, but it should just about be able to do everyday tasks and can run a few apps too. However, if you have a little more money, it would probably be worthwhile trying to find a phone with a bit more RAM.
For £9-£10 per month it's possible to increase the RAM to 2GB with the Nokia 3. This is an Android phone with 16GB storage, a 720p HD screen an 8 megapixel camera, FM Radio and NFC for mobile payments like Android pay. This contract comes with unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB data. This is a cashback deal with the basic line rental costing £17.99 a month and includes a total of £192 cashback.
Although it's nearly double the cost of the most basic smartphone, this device will be able to tackle all apps with ease, is well made and should last the life of the contract easily. The Nokia 3 is definitely the phone we would buy.
